The historic Whipple through truss bridge over the East Fork White River near Fort Vallonia, Indiana, narrowly escaped demolition in the name of progress. When a new bridge was constructed nearby in 2008, the old structure was preserved and repurposed, reopening as a pedestrian crossing.
