In the Spring of 1847, the Choctaw Nation received word of the Great Famine in Ireland. Despite having been forcibly removed from their homelands just a decade before, and facing poverty and hunger themselves, the tribe pulled together what funds they could to send across the Atlantic for relief efforts. In Indian Country, it’s understood that one does not become a chief without exemplifying generosity. To be a leader, one must meet the needs of the people, which includes sharing their burdens.
