Next Generation Interceptor (NGI)

We are responding to a sanitary sewer overflow from the Potomac Interceptor in Montgomery County, MD, identified Monday evening. A bypass system is being built to help contain the flow. Work is near Clara Barton Pkwy, just east of the I-495 interchange. One inbound lane remains closed as a precaution. Drinking water IS safe, and DC Water service is not affected. DC Water crews are continuing work at the Potomac Interceptor site to manage the sewer overflow and move toward full containment. Since the temporary bypass system was activated, flow is being redirected back into the sewer system and to Blue Plains. Some of the wastewater is still escaping around the break site as expected.
