On July 17-18, 1945 the USS ALABAMA and her task group bombarded major industrial plants in Honshu. Some 1500 tons of shells were thrown into the mills and factories, but the destruction couldn’t be observed due to heavy rains. The USS ALABAMA later learned that it was a job well done. In this video you see South Dakota class battleships firing at Honshu which is approximately 50 miles north of Tokyo (July 14-15).
