On International Women’s Day, we salute the extraordinary women of the Durham coalfield who 40 years ago sustained our communities during the 1984-85 Miners Strike. Their contribution throughout that year - and throughout our history - is immeasurable. Last weekend Women Against Pit Closures marched proudly through the streets of Durham. Centuries of mining on the Durham coalfield came to an end on this day in 1993 when the last shift was worked at Wearmouth Colliery. The miners fought hard against plans to close the mines and devastate our communities and our people - through a bitter year-long strike and beyond. The Tories said there were no plans.
